Raynor Winn and the Gigspanner Big Band on the South West Coast Path

Listen on

Episode notes

Raynor Winn’s best-selling book “The Salt Path” tells how she and her husband Moth became homeless just as he was diagnosed with a terminal neuro-degenerative disease. Despite this, they set off to walk the 630 challenging miles of the South West Coast Path which stretches from Minehead in Somerset along the coasts of Devon and Cornwall to Poole Harbour in Dorset. The redemptive story of their dogged determination, loving relationship and close connection with the natural world made the book a best seller.

And now Raynor has teamed up with Peter Knight’s Gigspanner Big Band (featuring Hannah Martin and Philip Henry of Edgelarks, John Spiers of Bellowhead, guitarist Roger Flack and percussionist Sacha Trochet) to create a new show called Saltlines - which combines traditional music from the South West Coast with new words about the area. In this episode, host Matthew Bannister gets the great privilege of attending rehearsals in a village hall near Exmouth, and then walking the Coast Path with Raynor.
