In the late 1990s, Manchester City were in crisis. Following relegation from the Premier League in 1996, they were unable to bounce back to the top flight at the first attempt. Following Alan Ball's resignation, Steve Coppell, Phil Neal, and Asa Hartford all briefly held the position of manager. In December 1996, City appointed Frank Clark to try and halt the slide down the leagues. In his short spell in charge, he wasn't able to put the brakes on - David Mooney spoke to the former manager in 2013 to discuss what went wrong during his time in the Maine Road dugout.
